Under the new leadership of Producing Director Paul R. Tetreault, Ford's Theatre is excited about a dynamic new chapter in its history.   Located in the heart of our Nation's capital, The Washington Design Center is the mid-Atlantic region's largest single resource and destination for the design industry offering top industry brands, manufacturers resources, services for design professionals as well as special events and programs for the trade and consumers alike. In 1982, The Washington Design Center was converted from a refrigerated warehouse, originally built in 1919, and a 150,000 square foot section was added to the original 250,000 square foot warehouse to create The Washington Design Center as it is today. With just under 400,000 square feet of space, there are over 60 wholesale residential, commercial and building products showrooms. As the majority of the building is a wholesale market for high-end furnishings, The Washington Design Center is dedicated to providing the finest in home and commercial furnishings "To the Trade." The "Trade" is an industry term referring to interior designers, architects, decorators, space planners and design consultants. To meet the growing demands of the tremendous real estate growth and desire of homeowners to enhance their homes with the finest in kitchen and bath designs, a retail level comprised of Kitchen, Bath and Building Design Center showrooms is open to the public six days per week.

DC Union Station

Opened on October 27, 1907 and completed in 1908, Union Station is considered to be one of the finest examples of the Beaux-Arts style of architecture. Architect, Daniel Burnham designed the building to be monumental in every respect and to serve as a gateway for the capital city. At the time it was built, the Station covered more ground than any other building in the United States and was the largest train station in the world. The Station sits on the edge of an area once known as "Swampoodle," an infamous shantytown located on the sewery remnants of Tiber Creek. The total area occupied by the Station and the terminal zone was originally about 200 acres and included 75 miles of tracks. In fact, if put on its side, the Washington Monument could lay within the confines of the Station's concourse.

Alone among the Founders of the United States George Washington earned the title "Father of his Country" in recognition of his leadership in the cause of American independence. Appointed commander of the Continental Army in 1775, he molded a fighting force that won independence from Great Britain. In 1787 as President of the Constitutional Convention, he helped guide the deliberations to form a government that has lasted for more than 200 years. Two years later he was unanimously elected the first President of the United States. Washington defined the Presidency and helped develop the relationships among the three branches of government. He established precedents that successfully launched the new government on its course. Washington remained ever mindful of the ramifications of his decisions and actions, for he was a consummate statesman. With this monument the citizens of the United States show their enduring gratitude and respect.

DC Arctic: A Friend Acting Strangely

Earlier spring thaws! Later fall freeze-ups! Greater storm impacts! Reduced sea ice! Unfamiliar species of plants and animals! What do these changes mean for the Arctic, its wildlife, its people—and for the rest of the planet? The Arctic: A Friend Acting Strangely exhibit is part of the Forces of Change Program at the National Museum of Natural History. The exhibit explores changes that have been observed in the Arctic, the Earth’s northernmost region, and how they are monitored by scientists and polar residents. Native peoples of the Arctic have always lived with year-to-year fluctuations in weather and ice conditions. In recent decades, they have witnessed that the climate has become unpredictable, the land and sea unfamiliar. An elder in Arctic Canada recently described the weather as uggianaqtuq—an Inuit word that can suggest strange, unexpected behavior, sometimes described as that of “a friend acting strangely.” During the past 20 years temperatures have risen rapidly; permafrost has begun to melt; and sea ice cover and ice caps have been shrinking. In response, plant and animal distributions have begun to shift. Arctic waters are warming; and animals are changing their migration routes. Some of these changes have beneficial effects while others bring hardship or have costly implications.
