Arctic: A Friend Acting Strangely
Earlier spring thaws! Later fall freeze-ups! Greater storm impacts! Reduced sea ice! Unfamiliar species of plants and animals! What do these changes mean for the Arctic, its wildlife, its people—and for the rest of the planet? The Arctic: A Friend Acting Strangely exhibit is part of the Forces of Change Program at the National Museum of Natural History. The exhibit explores changes that have been observed in the Arctic, the Earth’s northernmost region, and how they are monitored by scientists and polar residents. Native peoples of the Arctic have always lived with year-to-year fluctuations in weather and ice conditions. In recent decades, they have witnessed that the climate has become unpredictable, the land and sea unfamiliar. An elder in Arctic Canada recently described the weather as uggianaqtuq—an Inuit word that can suggest strange, unexpected behavior, sometimes described as that of “a friend acting strangely.” During the past 20 years temperatures have risen rapidly; permafrost has begun to melt; and sea ice cover and ice caps have been shrinking. In response, plant and animal distributions have begun to shift. Arctic waters are warming; and animals are changing their migration routes. Some of these changes have beneficial effects while others bring hardship or have costly implications.

The Polo Cup for Breast Cancer
Capitol Polo Club and the Tigerlily Foundation partner to host the inaugural Polo Cup for Breast Cancer Awareness. WASHINGTON, D.C., 8/3/08 – On September 14th, 2008 The Capitol Polo Club of Washington, D.C. will open its gates for the inaugural Polo Cup for Breast Cancer Awareness. Held in conjunction with the Capitol Women’s Challenge, a USPA sponsored polo tournament where polo-playing women showcase their talents. The Polo Cup for Breast Cancer Awareness aims to increase the understanding of and support for women diagnosed with breast cancer. Combating breast cancer continues to be one of the medical profession’s greatest challenges. Most people have been touched personally, or someone very close to them has been affected by breast cancer. The Polo Cup for Breast Cancer Awareness is a high caliber event that brings together corporate leaders, non-profit organizations, medical professionals, diplomats and women diagnosed with breast cancer to raise awareness and support for these issues. Proceeds from the event benefit local community efforts aiding women diagnosed with breast cancer through education, personal contact, financial assistance, and promoting a better feeling about themselves. This year, the Capitol Polo Club has joined the Tigerlily Foundation, a newly formed area nonprofit which supports those diagnosed with breast cancer as well as provides aftercare assistance to survivors. The mission of the foundation is to educate, empower, advocate for, support and inspire young women affected by breast cancer; to end isolation among young adult breast cancer survivors and to improve the quality of life for young adult breast cancer survivors by creating vigilant self-advocates. The Tigerlily Foundation has garnered national media attention from such outlets as Good Morning America, FOX and Essence magazine by providing unique and effective programs to the community such as the “Chemo Buddy” program, which provides someone to talk to while aiding in navigating the healthcare system, deciphering medical jargon, and providing practical services for the patient and their family. In addition, they work with women to provide education, health updates, tips for health care, and to promote a sense of empowerment. The Capitol Polo Club is a member’s club located 30 miles outside Washington, D.C. Every year the club hosts several events supporting great causes throughout the D.C. Metropolitan Area. The club’s strong support of the breast cancer awareness campaign is grounded in the fact that several club members have been personally affected or have a family member or friend who has been diagnosed.

Become a CSI Investigator: Free Classes at DC's Crime Museum
Starting in October, the National Museum of Crime and Punishment will offer free classes to museum patrons on the practices and techniques of CSI investigators. Patrons will have the opportunity to learn about using dental records to identify victims, fingerprinting, evidence collection, and DNA interpretation. All classes will take place in the mock-CSI lab inside the museum, taught by graduate students from George Washington University Masters Program for Crime Scene Investigation. This first workshop will discuss Impression Evidence, which includes fingerprints, footprints, and dental imprints. Inside the museum, leaders will create a fictional crime scenario, briefing participants on the facts of the crime and showing the available evidence. As evidence is gathered, guests will learn from the workshop’s leaders how this type of evidence is collected and analyzed in a real forensic lab, as well as personally work through CSI procedures to identify the criminal.

Georgia National Fair
Get ready Georgia! Gretchen Wilson, The Beach Boys, Big & Rich, and the Country Gold Tour 2006 will perform on the stage in Reaves Arena. Be the first in your neighborhood to ride the rides. Be the first in your neighborhood to dance to the music. Be the first in your neighborhood to gobble a turkey leg. Be the first in your neighborhood to attend one of North America's "Top 50" Fairs. For the first time ever, the Georgia National Fair will have a special "Sneak-a-Peek" of the Fair during the afternoon and evening of October 5. The Fair's preview will feature a free outdoor concert, Fair food, and Pay-One-Price Midway rides. "The Georgia National Fair is exploding with so much to do that it will take an extra day to enjoy it all," said Michael Froehlich, executive director. "The Georgia National Fair is pleased Gretchen Wilson will perform for her many fans in Georgia. The Beach Boys bring back some of our favorite pop songs while Big & Rich and the Country Gold Tour will round out a superb lineup of the greatest in country music which is the mainstay of the Fair's entertainment," Froehlich added. The 17th annual, state-sponsored Georgia National Fair, October 6-15, is Georgia's celebration of its youth, agriculture, and heritage. Concerts in Reaves Arena are scheduled as follows: Gretchen Wilson, October 7; The Beach Boys, October 13; Big & Rich with special guest star Cowboy Troy, October 14; and The Country Gold Tour 2006 featuring Leroy Van Dyke and the Auctioneers with Rex Allen, Jr., Jimmy Fortune, Jean Shepard, and Billy Joe Royal, October 15.
